Small collection of papers relating to the Wickes family, including Col. Joseph Wickes ( - 1864) and Judge Joseph A. Wickes (1826-1915), who were father and son. The Wickes' family is associated with Piner's Grove near Chestertown, the Barroll House on High Street and the Wallis-Wickes House on High Street in Chestertown. Documents include receipts and correspondence related to Col. Wickes' daughters schooling, records of advertisements placed in the Kent News, and a receipt from the Protestant Episcopal Church for hiring a vocal instructor. A large group of documents (22) pertain to the estate of Nicholas Smith and date to the 1830s. The Judge Wickes documents include a letter related to legal proceedings. Additionally, there are deeds for Lewin W. Wickes, Charlotte Wickes dating to the late 1800s along with an advertisement for the sale of the estate of Thomas S. Wickes in 1902. Finally, there is some modern correspondence relating to record of Augustine Herrman traveling to the residents of a "Captain Wikx" at Love Point on Kent Island in 1659. |
