Scope & Content |
Photocopies of a large collection of papers related to the Smyth and Willson families of Trumpington on Eastern Neck near Rock Hall, Kent County Maryland. The originals of these documents, along with a much larger collection, are owned by Mildred Willson Strong--a descendent and current owner of Trumpington. This porton of the collection contains mostly correspondence of the Willson family, beginning with letters to and from Anna Martha Young Willson, who came to Trumpington as a governess in 1838 and eventually married Richard Bennett Willson, grandson of Thomas Smyth (1730-1819) and heir to Trumpington. Included in the correspondence are letters written to Anna Young Willson by her former teacher, Julia Compton of Washington, DC; her uncle Alonzo Manning, her brothers and friends. A significant number of the letters are difficult to read as they have been written two ways on the paper, but many have been transcribed. |
